Story
Two workers move through a grove of twisted olive trees, bending to gather fruit while surrounded by dense foliage. The trees themselves seem to twist and sway, their trunks and branches rendered with thick, directional strokes of green, brown, and blue that give the whole scene a sense of motion. The ground beneath the pickers is textured with the same energetic brushwork, tying the figures into the rhythm of the landscape around them. This oil painting was made in 1889 and is held at the Kröller-Müller Museum. The artist, Vincent van Gogh, painted it during a period of intense engagement with landscape subjects. One detail worth noticing is how the brushstrokes shift direction across the canvas, creating a sense of wind or movement that runs through the leaves, the branches, and the ground alike, unifying the figures and the trees into a single pulsing field of color and texture.
