Story
Twisted trunks of olive trees bend and curl around a stretch of blue water, their forms built from thick, swirling strokes of green, blue, and yellow that seem to move with the wind. The painting dates to 1889 and was made in oil, now held at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Vincent van Gogh painted it with the same restless, expressive brushwork that marks his approach to landscape. Looking closely, the water seems to ripple in harmony with the gnarled branches above it, as if the whole scene pulses with a single rhythm of color and motion.
