Story
Clusters of white and pink roses fill the canvas, their petals rendered in dense, textured strokes alongside leafy green stems and foliage that wind through the arrangement. The blossoms press close together, leaving little space around them, so the eye moves across layered color rather than settling on any single bloom. This oil painting was completed in 1889 and is held at the National Museum of Western Art. Vincent van Gogh painted it, and he is known for his contribution to the Post-Impressionist movement. Looking closely, the brushwork itself becomes the main interest, with ridges of paint building up the surface so the flowers appear almost sculpted rather than merely depicted, giving the roses a weight and presence that goes beyond simple botanical illustration.
