Story
A twisted old tree covered in white blossoms rises from a grassy meadow scattered with small flowers, rendered in shades of green, white, and brown. The composition captures a sense of early growth and quiet seasonal change in the orchard setting. The piece was completed in 1888 using oil on canvas, and it is held today at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, having entered the collection through a purchase fund established by Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ittleson Jr. Vincent van Gogh painted the work, and he is also known for creating the painting Starry Night. A viewer might notice how the gnarled, twisting lines of the tree trunk contrast with the soft, delicate clusters of blossoms spread across its branches, giving the whole scene a feeling of both age and renewal standing together in the open field.
