Story
A bearded man in a postal uniform and cap looks out at the viewer, set against a lively backdrop of yellow-green tones scattered with red and orange blossoms. He stands with a steady, direct presence, his dark coat and buttons contrasting against the busy, decorative setting behind him. The portrait was painted in 1888 in oil and is held at the Barnes Foundation. Vincent van Gogh, the artist behind this piece, is known more broadly for other paintings created during his lifetime, though only this one is detailed here. Worth noticing is how the floral pattern behind the man seems almost to vibrate against the stillness of his gaze, giving the composition a tension between the calm figure and the restless background surrounding him.
