Story
A turbulent sky of churning white clouds stretches above a scene of golden wheat, dark green cypress trees, and pale blue mountains in the distance. The composition pulls together open farmland and tall, flame-like trees under a restless atmosphere that seems to move across the canvas. This oil painting was made by Vincent van Gogh in 1889 and is held today at the National Gallery, having entered the collection through the Courtauld Fund purchase. Van Gogh painted in a style marked by bold brushwork and intense color, qualities visible throughout this landscape. Looking closely, the sky's curling strokes echo the shapes of the cypress branches, linking earth and air in one continuous rhythm of movement.
