Story

A sweep of yellow dominates the upper field while patches of red, blue, black, and white break across the surface in loose, energetic marks, suggesting sound and motion rather than a scene. Painted in 1911, the picture is held at the Lenbachhaus. Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944), a Russian artist linked to Expressionism, also later worked within the Bauhaus and created Composition VII.
