Story

Sweeping bands of color move across the surface in curved and jagged shapes, with blue, red, yellow, green, and white interacting throughout the canvas, suggesting motion and turbulence rather than any recognizable scene. The piece was made in 1910 using oil on pasteboard, and it now belongs to the Yale University Art Gallery, having entered the collection as a gift from the Société Anonyme. Wassily Kandinsky (1866–1944) was associated with Expressionism, and among his recognized works is Composition VII. Looking closely, the way the angular lines cut against the softer curves gives the whole arrangement a restless, charged energy.
