Story

A quiet village street unfolds beneath a thick, dark blue sky, its houses painted in bright yellow, pink, and white, all built up with loose, energetic strokes of color. The scene belongs to Murnau Burggrabenstrasse 1, painted by Wassily Kandinsky in 1908, an oil on paper mounted on Masonite now held at the Dallas Museum of Art, where it entered the collection through a purchase by the Dallas Art Association. Kandinsky, born in 1866 and died in 1944, worked across Expressionism, Symbolism, and later the Bauhaus, and is also known for his piece Composition VII. Looking closely, the buildings seem almost to vibrate against the heavy sky, as if the pigment itself were unsettled rather than resting flat on the paper, giving the humble street scene an unexpected charge of color and motion that pulls attention away from any single architectural detail toward the overall sensation of light and hue.
