Story

A dense arrangement of geometric shapes and lines spreads across a mustard-yellow background, with sharp forms rendered in black, red, yellow, and blue creating a sense of energy and tension across the surface. The composition contains no recognizable objects, only interacting shapes that seem to float and collide against the warm ground. This piece, titled Points, was painted by Wassily Kandinsky in 1920 using oil, and it is held at the Ohara Museum of Art. Kandinsky (1866–1944) was a Russian artist associated with Expressionism, and he also created the notable work Composition VII. One detail worth noticing is how the blue and red marks punctuate the field of black lines, giving the eye small points of rest within the otherwise busy pattern of forms.
