Story
A cluster of slender birches rises along the edge of a view that opens onto a blue lake and rolling green land beyond, all beneath a soft, pale sky. The trunks stand close together, almost like a family gathered at the water's edge, drawing the eye from the foreground into the distance. This oil painting was completed in 1907 and is held today at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Its creator, Willard LeRoy Metcalf, born in 1858 and died in 1925, worked within the Impressionism movement that shaped his approach to light and landscape. One detail worth lingering on is the pale sky, which seems to glow faintly behind the trees, giving the whole scene a quiet, airy sense of depth and calm that draws attention to the delicate balance between the vertical birches and the horizontal sweep of the lake.
