Dream of Spring (Reve de printemps)

Story

A seated woman draped in white and purple fabric rests in a garden, encircled by four small winged figures carrying pink blossoms. The painting, titled Dream of Spring, was completed in 1901 by William-Adolphe Bouguereau using oil, and it now belongs to the Indianapolis Museum of Art, where it entered the collection as a gift from Melvin and Bren Simon. Bouguereau, who lived from 1825 to 1905 and worked in France, is associated with academic art and also created the notable painting Nymphs and Satyr. One detail worth noticing is how the winged children cluster closely around the robed woman, their small forms and pale flowers set against the soft greenery of the garden backdrop, giving the composition a delicate, airy balance between the central figure and her surrounding companions.
