Story
A gathering of beachgoers fills the shore, sheltered under orange and white umbrellas while a Victorian house with a yellow spire rises in the background, the whole scene washed in soft blues, greens, and warm tones. The painting, titled Beach Umbrellas at Blue Point, was created in 1915 in oil and is held by the Smithsonian American Art Museum. William Glackens (1870–1938) was an American painter associated with the Ashcan School and American realism. Looking closely, the contrast between the loose, breezy brushwork of the sand and water and the more defined architecture of the mansion behind gives the composition a sense of depth, as if the leisurely crowd exists in a different rhythm than the solid structure watching over them from a distance.
