Green Bowl of Flowers

Story

A vase overflows with red, pink, yellow, and blue blossoms, set against a warm brown backdrop. The arrangement rests on a surface that recedes into shadow, letting the bright petals stand out against the darker tones around them. This oil painting, titled Green Bowl of Flowers, was created in 1916 by William Glackens and now belongs to the Barnes Foundation. Glackens, an American painter born in 1870 and died in 1938, worked within American realism and the Ashcan School. One detail worth noticing is how the warm brown background seems to push the cluster of flowers forward, giving the composition a sense of depth despite its simple setting.
