Story
A crowd of bathers gathers near a timber structure along a shoreline of vivid blue water, with figures swimming and lounging close to shore. Behind them, white buildings sit against rolling green hills under a soft, pale sky. The scene captures a seaside leisure moment rendered with loose, lively brushwork typical of the period's casual outdoor gatherings. The painting was made in 1910 using oil on canvas, and it is held today at the Barnes Foundation. William Glackens, born in 1870 and died in 1938, worked within American realism and the Ashcan School, bringing an eye for everyday scenes shaped by his background as a painter and illustrator. One detail worth noticing is how the small wooden structure anchors the composition, drawing the eye from the crowded water toward the quiet buildings and hills beyond.
