Story
A green park unfolds beneath spreading trees, where small figures walk and gather along a path, with a bridge visible in the distance. The palette favors greens, browns, and earth tones, giving the setting a warm, shaded feel. This oil painting dates to 1915 and is held at the Hunter Museum of American Art. The work was made by William James Glackens (1859–1891), an American painter associated with the Ashcan School. Looking closely, the strolling figures appear small and loosely rendered against the dense foliage, suggesting a casual, unposed gathering rather than a formal event. The bridge in the background adds depth to the composition, anchoring the park setting within a larger urban landscape. The overall effect is one of quiet, everyday observation rendered through color and light rather than sharp detail.
