Story

A woman sits reading, dressed in a golden yellow kimono, surrounded by Asian art panels and decorative objects rendered in warm brown tones. The quiet domestic scene draws attention to the rich textures of her robe against the muted backdrop. This oil painting was completed in 1887. The artist, William Merritt Chase (1849–1916), was an American painter associated with Impressionism, also known for Still Life with Watermelon.
