Story

A sandy shoreline stretches toward a rocky breakwater, with figures seated near the water under a blue sky scattered with white clouds. William Merritt Chase painted this oil work in 1897, bringing an Impressionist sensibility to the sunlit beach setting. The piece comes from the Daniel J. Terra Collection, part of the Terra Foundation for American Art. Chase, born in 1849 and died in 1916, worked as an American painter and photographer.
