Still Life with Hummingbird

Story

A small bird hovers just above a cluster of red roses and white blossoms, arranged in an ornamental vase that sits against a plain brown backdrop. The flowers spill gently to the sides, their petals catching light while the hummingbird's wings remain poised in mid-motion above the arrangement. This piece was painted in 1870 in oil and belongs to the Indianapolis Museum of Art. The artist, William Merritt Chase (1849–1916), an American painter and photographer associated with Impressionism, also created Still Life with Watermelon. One detail worth noticing is how the hummingbird's small form draws the eye upward from the dense cluster of blooms, breaking the stillness of the arrangement below it with a touch of implied movement.
