Story

Weathered olive trees with knotted, twisting trunks line a dirt path cutting through fields and clusters of trees. The scene stretches toward distant woodland under open sky. William Merritt Chase (1849–1916) painted this oil on canvas mounted to wood panel in 1910. An American painter working within Impressionism, Chase is also known for Still Life with Watermelon. The piece comes from the Daniel J. Terra Collection.
