A Garden in Nassau

Story

A sunlit enclosure opens behind whitewashed walls, its blue gate standing against palm trees and dense tropical foliage, while clouds drift across a clear blue sky. Winslow Homer made this watercolor in 1885, applying selective scraping and touches of gouache over graphite on textured cream paper. Homer, an American painter working in realism, captured the garden with loose, luminous strokes. The piece now belongs to the Terra Foundation for American Art, having entered the Daniel J. Terra Collection.
