Story
A man rests in a small wooden boat, drifting on quiet water with trees and a shoreline framing the scene. The surface is painted in soft greens, browns, and blues, giving the setting a hushed, still feeling. The piece, titled A Good One, Adirondacks, was made in 1889 by Winslow Homer using watercolor, and it is now held at The Hyde Collection, having come to the museum through a bequest. Homer, who lived from 1836 to 1910, worked within the realism movement and painted scenes grounded in careful observation of everyday life. Looking closely at the water, one notices how the stillness of the boat contrasts with the texture of the brushwork describing the trees and bank, giving the quiet moment a sense of balance between calm and detail.
