Story
A single tall pine rises along a wooded shore, looking out over a still lake beneath an overcast sky, the whole scene painted in soft grays and browns. The composition stays quiet, with the water appearing almost motionless under the dim light, and the trees along the bank thinning out toward the horizon. This piece, titled Adirondack Lake, was made in 1889 using watercolor, and it is held today at the Yale University Art Gallery. The artist, Winslow Homer (1836–1910), worked in the realism tradition and also created Autumn Tree Tops. Worth noticing is how the muted palette of gray and brown gives the forested shoreline a hushed, atmospheric feel, letting the solitary pine stand out against the pale, clouded sky above the lake.
