Story

A quiet stretch of sand opens along a sloped bank, where scattered palm fronds and low vegetation cling to the cliffside above the shore. The water itself stretches out calm and blue, meeting the sandy edge in a gentle, even line. This scene is rendered in watercolor, completed in 1890, and the piece is held today at the National Gallery of Art. The artist, Winslow Homer (1836–1910), was an American painter associated with realism, whose notable works include Autumn Tree Tops. A detail worth noticing is how the pale sand curves gradually upward into the cliff, letting the fronds and brush break the otherwise smooth transition between land and water.
