Breezing Up (A Fair Wind)

Story

A small wooden boat carries five figures across choppy green water, its tan canvas sail catching a strong wind beneath a cloudy sky, while another sailing vessel appears far off on the horizon. The scene captures the pull and strain of sailing, with the crew leaning into the gusts as the boat cuts through the waves. Winslow Homer painted this work in oil in 1873, and it is held at the National Gallery of Art, with the image made available through the courtesy of the museum's board of trustees. Homer, who lived from 1836 to 1910 and worked as an American painter, is associated with the realist movement. One detail worth noticing is the contrast between the rough texture of the water and the taut, wind-filled shape of the sail, which together suggest both motion and effort on the open sea.
