Story
A small boat carries four figures through rough seas, the water rendered in grays and whites against a stormy sky touched with muted earth tones. The vessel appears tiny beneath the heavy clouds above it, emphasizing the roughness of the surrounding waves. This watercolor over pencil on paper, titled Crab Fishing, was created in 1883 by Winslow Homer and is held at the Worcester Art Museum. Homer, who lived from 1836 to 1910, was an American artist associated with realism, and among his notable works is A Country Lad. One detail worth noticing is how the earth tones mix into the gray and white palette, softening the contrast between the dark clouds and the pale water. The overall scene conveys the sense of a small craft caught amid a larger, indifferent natural force, with the figures positioned closely together inside the hull.
