Story

Two figures wearing military-style helmets stand at a fortified lookout, bent over surveying instruments as they study a stretch of open, rolling ground beyond their post. The scene is rendered in oil, painted in 1886, and the work now belongs to the Addison Gallery of American Art, where it entered the collection as the gift of an anonymous donor. Winslow Homer (1836–1910), an American artist associated with realism, is also known for the work A Country Lad. The composition draws attention to the careful positioning of the men against the sweep of the terrain, their instruments angled as though charting every rise and fall of the land stretching out before them, giving the quiet lookout a sense of watchful concentration and purpose.
