Story

Two sailing vessels ride a stretch of blue water beneath a sky filled with clouds, their crews visible aboard as the boats lean into the breeze. The scene centers on this pair of fishing boats, rendered with the quick, fluid strokes that watercolor allows, each hull catching light against the darker sea. Winslow Homer completed this piece in 1903, working in watercolor and graphite on off-white wove paper, and it is now held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Homer, who lived from 1836 to 1910 and worked as an American painter, is associated with the American Barbizon school and with realism. Look closely at the handling of the sky, where loose washes of gray and white suggest shifting weather pressing down on the small boats below.
