Story
A small red boat tips on rough water as two fishermen pull in their nets, the sea shifting between green and blue beneath a clouded sky. The men lean into the work, bracing against the motion of the waves. Winslow Homer made this watercolor over graphite in 1887, and it is held at the National Gallery of Art. Homer, American (1836–1910), worked within realism and also painted Autumn Tree Tops. The rough texture of the water, rendered in shifting tones of green and blue, gives the scene a sense of weight and instability that pulls attention toward the strain of the labor itself.
