Story

Waves break hard against jagged rocks along a Maine shoreline, the water churning in deep blues and whites while a stormy sky looms overhead in muted browns and grays. The rugged coast fills most of the composition, giving the sense of a rising tide pressing against the land. Winslow Homer completed this watercolor in 1883, and it is held today at the National Gallery of Art. Homer worked in the realism movement, and among his notable works is A Country Lad. One detail worth noticing is how the spray of the breaking waves seems to catch light against the darker tones of the cliffs, giving the whole scene a sense of motion and force frozen in a single moment along the rocky Maine coastline.
