Story

Sailboats glide across turquoise water, their white canvas catching the wind as crew members move about the decks. Palm trees line the distant shore beneath a sky filled with clouds, suggesting a warm, coastal setting. This image captures a quiet maritime moment, with the boats appearing to prepare for departure. The watercolor over graphite work, created in 1903, is held at the National Gallery of Art. Winslow Homer (1836–1910), an American artist associated with realism, is known for his notable work A Country Lad. One detail worth noticing is the contrast between the vivid turquoise water and the muted tones of the cloudy sky, which draws the eye to the activity on the boats.
