Story
A gathering of sailboats and people fills the shallow water near shore, their forms built up in blues, browns, and earth tones that suggest sun and heat. Figures stand and wade among the boats, giving the scene a sense of everyday commerce and movement along the coast. The piece is titled Market Scene, Nassau, made in 1885 by Winslow Homer using watercolor and graphite, and it is held at the Yale University Art Gallery. Homer, who lived from 1836 to 1910 and worked in the United States, painted in a realist manner that grounded his scenes in observed detail. One detail worth noting is how the earth-toned hulls of the boats blend into the surrounding water, so that the vessels and the human figures seem almost woven into the same tonal fabric of the picture.
