Story
A lone figure dressed in brown clothing moves through a wooded landscape, walking alongside a black and white dog. The surrounding trees and underbrush are rendered in yellow, green, and gray tones, suggesting the quiet of an outdoor path. This piece, titled On the Trail, was created in 1892 by Winslow Homer using watercolor over graphite, and it is held at the National Gallery of Art. Homer, who lived from 1836 to 1910, worked within the tradition of realism. One detail worth noticing is how the muted palette of yellow, green, and gray blends the walking figure and dog into the texture of the forest, so that both seem part of the same quiet, shadowed world rather than set apart from it.
