Story
Tall palm trees rise along a reddish stretch of ground, with faint mountains visible in the distance beneath a pale sky. The trees lean and cluster together, their fronds catching light against the muted horizon. This watercolor over graphite was created in 1890 by Winslow Homer and is held at the National Gallery of Art. Homer, who lived from 1836 to 1910, worked in the realist tradition and was also known for the piece Autumn Tree Tops. One detail worth noting is the way the reddish ground contrasts sharply with the cooler tones of the sky, giving the composition an unusual warmth despite its simplicity. The slender trunks and feathery crowns of the palms stand out clearly against the soft, hazy background, drawing attention to their irregular, windswept shapes across the quiet field.
