Story

Tall palmetto trees line a quiet waterway in Florida, their fronds reaching upward along the shore while a small figure dressed in red stands near the bank. The scene draws attention through the contrast of the vivid clothing against the cool greens and blues of the water and foliage. This piece, titled Red Shirt, Homosassa, Florida, was created in 1904 using watercolor over graphite, and it is held at the National Gallery of Art. The artist, Winslow Homer (1836–1910), worked within the realism movement, bringing a direct observational quality to his depictions of nature and figures. One detail worth noticing is how the red clothing becomes the single warm accent in an otherwise shaded, verdant landscape, pulling the eye toward the human presence amid the tall palmettos.
