Story

A wide stretch of sandy shoreline stretches beneath a clouded sky, with green waves tipped in white foam rolling toward the beach in muted earthy and blue tones. This piece, titled Sandy Beach with Breakers, was made in 1869 using brush and oil on canvas, and it is held at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. The work came to the museum as a gift from Mrs. Charles Savage Homer, Jr. Winslow Homer (1836–1910) was an American artist associated with realism. One detail worth noticing is the way the white crests of the breakers stand out sharply against the darker green of the water, giving the sea a sense of restless motion even in the quiet, overcast setting of the beach scene.
