Sunlight on the Coast

Waves break hard against a dark line of rocks while heavy clouds gather above, the water churning into streaks of white foam against a palette of blue and grey. The scene carries a sense of force, with the sea pressed against the shore under a sky that seems unsettled. Painted in 1890 in oil, the work belongs to the Toledo Museum of Art. It is an example of marine art, showing the kind of ocean subject that appears in work by Winslow Homer (1836–1910), an American painter associated with realism who also made a notable work called Autumn Tree Tops. Looking closely, the contrast between the pale foam and the darker rock and sky gives the whole composition a feeling of weight and tension, as if the storm has not yet passed.
