Sunset

Story

A lone figure rests inside a dark boat drifting on calm water, hemmed in by thick green growth beneath a soft, glowing sky. The quiet scene suggests the close of day, with the small vessel barely disturbing the surface it floats upon. This piece, titled Sunset, was painted by Winslow Homer in 1875 using oil, and it now belongs to the National Gallery of Art. Homer, who lived from 1836 to 1910 and worked as an American painter associated with realism, also created the piece Autumn Tree Tops. One detail worth noticing is the contrast between the dense, dark plant life crowding the edges of the water and the pale, open expanse of sky above, which gives the composition a sense of enclosed stillness even as the light opens upward.
