The Flirt

Story

A small sailboat carries six figures dressed in period clothing, their vessel cutting through green-tinted waves beneath a sky washed in gold. The composition sets the group close together, suggesting the quiet conversations and glances that might pass between passengers on a short crossing. Painted in 1874, this oil work is held at the National Gallery of Art. Winslow Homer (1836–1910), an American artist associated with realism, created this maritime scene. The golden light overhead contrasts with the churning green water below, giving the painting a sense of shifting atmosphere even as the boat holds steady on its course.
