Story
A rust-colored fox makes its way across deep snow, its body low as it pushes forward near a frozen shoreline, while a group of dark crows wheels in the air above. The scene belongs to a painting made in 1893, rendered in oil, and now held at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. The artist, Winslow Homer (1836–1910), worked within the realism movement, bringing a direct and unembellished eye to this animal subject. One detail worth noticing is how the icy coastal background stretches out behind the fox, giving the sense of a wide, cold expanse pressing in on the lone animal below the circling birds. The contrast between the warm tone of the fox's fur and the pale snow around it sharpens the image's quiet tension.
