Story
A single figure sits quietly in a small boat, drifting on still water. Thick woods rise up around him, framing the scene on all sides beneath a sky full of clouds. The stillness of the water mirrors the quiet concentration of the fisherman as he waits alone in the small craft. This watercolor over graphite was made in 1889 by Winslow Homer and is held at the National Gallery of Art. Homer, who lived from 1836 to 1910, was an American artist associated with realism, and he also created the notable work A Country Lad. Worth noticing is how the dense trees seem to close in on the lone boat, giving the entire scene a hushed, enclosed feeling despite the open expanse of water beneath the overcast sky.
