Story
A figure wearing a wide-brimmed straw hat and a pale shirt lies back in a stretch of grass, taking his ease under tall shade trees that lean over a wooden dwelling nearby. The quiet pause of midday seems to settle over the whole yard, with the house standing calm in the background. Winslow Homer painted this scene in oil in 1872, and it now belongs to the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, having entered the collection through the Ella Gallup Sumner and Mary Catlin Sumner Collection Fund. Homer, an American painter associated with realism, also created the notable work A Country Lad. One detail worth noting is how the dappled shade from the trees falls across the resting man, softening the edges of the yard around him and the house behind.
