The West Wind

Story

A lone figure in a hat sits among wind-bent dune grasses, gazing out at churning ocean waves under a heavy, storm-laden sky. The scene captures a sense of raw coastal weather pressing against the solitary onlooker. This piece, titled The West Wind, was painted in 1891 by Winslow Homer using oil, and it is held at the Addison Gallery of American Art. Homer, who lived from 1836 to 1910 and worked within the realism movement, also created the notable painting A Country Lad. The grasses in the foreground bend sharply in one direction, emphasizing the force of the gusts sweeping across the bluff. The waves below churn with visible energy, while the sky above darkens toward the horizon, reinforcing the atmosphere of an approaching storm.
