Winter Coast

Story

Dark rocks jut along a shoreline as white-capped waves crash beneath a heavy gray sky, the whole scene blanketed in snow. The cold light and churning water give the coast a harsh, isolated mood. This oil painting was created in 1892 by Winslow Homer (1836–1910), an American artist associated with realism. He also worked as an illustrator and photographer, and painted the notable work A Country Lad.

Where it works

Cool-toned artwork suited to living rooms and dens, and to boardrooms, in a horizontal format.
