Carl Larsson was a Swedish artist associated with the Arts and Crafts movement and is best known for his luminous watercolor depictions of family life and domestic interiors. Born into poverty in Stockholm, Larsson overcame a difficult childhood after gaining admission to the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts, where his artistic talent quickly flourished. Early in his career he worked as an illustrator before moving to Paris, where he later joined the Scandinavian artists’ colony at Grez-sur-Loing.
A turning point came when Larsson married artist and designer Karin Larsson, whose creativity strongly influenced the warm, harmonious interiors featured in his paintings. Their home, Lilla Hyttnäs in Sundborn, became both a family residence and an artistic ideal celebrated through Larsson’s illustrated books and watercolors. His scenes of children, gardens, and domestic life helped shape international perceptions of Swedish design and lifestyle. Although he also considered his monumental murals and frescoes among his greatest achievements, Larsson remains especially admired for the intimate, colorful works that combined artistry, family life, and decorative design into a uniquely personal vision.
