Emanuel Phillips Fox was an Australian painter renowned for his luminous, Impressionist-influenced scenes of modern life. Born in Melbourne, he studied at the National Gallery School before travelling to Paris, where he trained at the Académie Julian and École des Beaux-Arts. Exposure to French Impressionism transformed his approach to colour, light and atmosphere.
After returning to Melbourne, Fox helped establish the Melbourne Art School and contributed to the development of Australian plein-air painting. He later settled in Europe and married fellow artist Ethel Carrick, with whom he travelled through France, Italy, North Africa and Australia. His paintings often feature elegant figures, sunlit gardens, intimate interiors and leisurely outdoor scenes, rendered with refined colour and fluid brushwork. Blending European sophistication with an Australian sensitivity to brilliant natural light, Fox became one of Australia’s most accomplished and internationally connected artists of the early twentieth century.
