Gloria Petyarr, also known as Gloria Pitjara, was a celebrated Aboriginal Australian artist from the Anmatyerre community of Utopia in the Northern Territory. Internationally recognized for her expressive abstract compositions, she became especially renowned for her iconic Bush Medicine series, inspired by traditional healing plants and the rhythms of her ancestral land.
Petyarre began her artistic career in 1977 as a founding member of the influential Utopia Women’s Batik Group, established with support from the Central Australian Aboriginal Media Association (CAAMA). Initially working in batik, she later transitioned to acrylic painting on canvas through the landmark Utopia “Summer Project” of 1989. Her distinctive style featured sweeping brushstrokes, layered textures, and vivid color fields that conveyed movement and spirituality.
In 1999, Petyarre won the prestigious Wynne Prize for her painting Leaves. Her work has been widely exhibited internationally and is held in major Australian collections, including the National Gallery of Australia.
