Ramón Casas was a leading Catalan artist and one of the defining figures of the Modernisme movement. Born in Barcelona into a wealthy family, Casas studied art in both Barcelona and Paris, where he absorbed the influences of Impressionism and modern urban culture. Renowned for his portraits, social scenes, and depictions of contemporary life, he painted the intellectual, political, and cultural elite of Barcelona, Paris, and Madrid with remarkable elegance and psychological insight.
Casas became especially known for his atmospheric crowd scenes, café culture paintings, and striking graphic design work, including posters and advertisements that helped shape the visual identity of Catalan modernisme. Alongside artists such as Santiago Rusiñol, he was closely associated with the famous Barcelona café Els Quatre Gats, an important gathering place for avant-garde artists and writers, including a young Pablo Picasso. Today, Casas is regarded as one of Spain’s most important modern painters and designers of the early twentieth century.
