Story

A red and orange bromeliad bloom opens in cross-section, its green leaves spreading outward while mist settles over distant trees behind it. The plant's inner layers sit exposed against that hazy backdrop, giving the small botanical subject an outsized presence. Alexis Rockman made the piece in 1994 using oil and lacquer on wood. Rockman, an American painter born in 1962, worked within the pop art movement.
