Story

Seen from above, windmills stand scattered across a sandy stretch of land bordered by deep blue water, while a dark, swirling tornado-like form looms in the sky above the scene. The composition balances the horizontal landscape against the churning threat overhead, suggesting tension between human structures and natural force. Rendered in oil on gessoed paper in 2008, the piece comes from Alexis Rockman (born 1962), an American painter associated with pop art.

Where it works

Cool-toned artwork suited to living rooms and dens, and to hotel guest rooms, in a horizontal format.
